Looking Back

The Day My Car Died

This picture is what inspired me to create the “Our Story” section; I was going through my pictures looking for a shot for my page about Ian and I ran across this one.  I knew I couldn’t use it for what I was looking for but there was such a great story behind it I thought I would share it.

It was the 2nd of July 2010, five or so in the afternoon and I was driving my beat up Ford Focus, affectionately known as BASS.  I was sitting at a red light, waiting to turn left in a pretty major intersection.  When I say major I mean 4 lane roads with 45mph average speed limit for both of the cross streets.  While sitting in the front of the line waiting for the light to turn green my car died.  All of a sudden my whole dashboard got brighter and then went completely out.  BASS had done similar things before but I was always able to restart him, sometimes after a few different tricks but not this time.  I did everything that had worked in the past and nothing.  The engine wouldn’t even turn over, there was absolutely nothing going on.  At this point I was starting to freak, I had no clue what to do so I turn on my hazards, tried not to cry and called Ian who at this point was my fiancé.

Needless to say the people behind me weren’t happy and no one was stopping to help.  Did I mention it was pouring rain?  Well it was.  Ian was on his way but it took 15-20 minutes before he could get there.  Finally after countless light cycles a man coming up from the road I was wanting to turn on saw me in my distress.  He went through the intersection parked his car and ran to me in the rain so he could push my car to where he was parked at.  It is amazing how one man stepping out will get other guys to step it up all of a sudden there were three of four guys pushing my car left through the intersection into a parking lot of a casual dining restaurant.

Shortly after getting to safety Ian arrived and he waited with me for the tow truck to get there, he was able to talk to the driver and we decided to have my car towed back to my house and he would look at it later.  He then proceeded to take my mind off the whole ordeal.  First off, he goofed off with me in his car which is when the picture was taken and he was dressed in a white T-shirt with hole-y jeans, which may be one of my favorite looks on him.  We went to Chipotle where we were joking around and I began to fake cry and Ian went on to say something to the effect of, “Babe, stop, you look fat when you cry” in a gentle manner.  Needless to say we got some looks and all I could do was laugh, all of the emotions from the afternoon erupted out of me in laughter.  It was wonderful.

That night Ian rescued me out of a scary situation with laughter, he was and is my perfect match.  I also got to learn his mad mechanical skills when he completely fixed my car and all we had to buy was parts for the car.

  1. Love it. I have a very similar story actually, with my car dying right before an intersection. Good times. 🙂 It was followed by a day of everything going wrong that possibly could. But funny now looking back about it. And I think you and Ian make a great match. Maybe someday I can actually meet him 😉
